Intimate Elopement at Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland - 8 Reasons to get married at Eilean Donan Castle

The very idea of an elopement is to get away from everything and get married with the love of your life without distractions of any kind. Aidee and Scott did it! Aidee had never been overseas before, making this trip very special for the two of them. They had decided to pick a special castle to get married at during their trip, and they rightfully picked the Eilean Donan Castle to make it happen. For this special event, Aidee sewed both of their outfits herself, including all the little details. You will see two examples of self-made wedding dresses throughout the photo series below. I think she did an outstanding job!
Over the last few years, I have fallen in love with the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. I am convinced that the Eilean Donan Castle one of the best places to get married at in Scotland. Here’s why:

Eight reasons why to have an Eilean Donan Castle Elopement:

  1. The landscapes surrounding the Castle are absolutely breathtaking. The castle was strategically built right where Loch Long, Loch Duich and Loch Alsh meet, allowing you to get a full panorama view of the lochs (lakes) and mountains surrounding the castle.

  2. The Castle is a famous historical site, its rich history going back to the 13th century. Tip: if you bring guests, you can plan guided tours for your guests whilst you are taking some photos in and around the castle: win-win!

  3. The Castle is closed to the public when you tie the knot. In other words, you get the unique experience of being in the castle all by yourself. Fairy tales come true at this magical place. Wedding takes place after 6pm, when the castle is closed.

  4. You have indoor and outdoor options. Remember that the weather in Scotland is very unpredictable, and that rain is common. Great for the lush green colors typical to the Highlands, but not always the best for you and your guests. You can get married in the biggest room of the castle, The Banqueting Hall, which is decorated with a variety of historical pieces.

  5. The size of the Castle is perfectly suitable for elopements and small weddings. The Banqueting Hall officially allows for ceremonies with up to 70 guests, but the ideal number would be around 30 or less. For the toast afterwards, you can go to the Billeting Room room downstairs from the Banqueting Hall, or to the courtyard outside with views over the Castle grounds and the Lochs.

  6. It’s relatively cheap! You can get married at Eilean Donan Castle for only £1250 (< 10 guests, perfect for elopements), or for £1500 (> 10 guests), both based on a ‘dry hire’ basis as described on their website. To give you an idea: according to a study in the UK with 18.000 couples, ‘dry hire’ venue hire averaged £3,788. Note that dry hire means that you have to organize catering yourself, or have your wedding dinner at a restaurant in the area. For catering, a great option would be Tartan Heart Events, specialized in catering for events. For restaurants, my number one recommendation would be the Waterside Restaurant owned by Jann and Neil MacRae. Their (sea)food is delicious and the restaurant is uniquely located between the train tracks of Kyle.

  7. There is a wide variety of accommodations and restaurants available! If you are bringing guests, the best option would be to have them all stay at The Eilean Donan Apartments. Offering beautiful self-catering apartments within walking distance of the Castle, it really is ideal for weddings with up to 40 guests. Tip: when you book the twelve apartments for three or more days, you can even have your own wedding reception in the front lawn! The best accommodation for the bride and groom is the Eilean Donan Cottage, located right on the banks overlooking the castle. It has everything you need, a wood burning stove, a bath, well-equipped kitchen en absolutely stunning views from the rooms. In the photos below you will get a good idea of what the Cottage is like. Besides those two recommended accommodations, there are numerous B&B’s available in the area, varying in price and distance.

  8. The Castle is located in Dornie , a perfect stop on route to the Isle of Skye. Situated near the A87, it will be easy to do day-trips to the Isle of Skye, a must see for you and your guests. Bring your walking shoes and hike up the famous Old Man of Storr, and a panorama view from the top. The Quiraing is easier accessible, if you are unable to hike up The Storr, and at least as impressive. You can park here and take in the view from the top. Tip: the Isle of Skye really shows off with half-cloudy weather, creating beautiful patches of light and adding depth to the landscape.
